[ȓə 'fenz], Fen Country ['fen 'kʌntrɪ], Landschaft in Ostengland, erstreckt sich westlich und südlich des Wash (Nordseebucht); umfasst Seemarschen in Küstennähe, Flussmarschen, Moore und flache Hügel (z. B. Isle of Ely) der zerstörten Kreideschichten weiter landeinwärts. Hügel und Marschen, in römischer Zeit durch niederen Seedeich geschützt, waren immer wieder Ansatzpunkte der Besiedlung. Heute sind die Fens ein Gebiet intensiven Ackerbaus mit Spezialkulturen. - Bereits in der Bronzezeit besiedelt, von den Römern zum Teil kultiviert.
